The Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) has released a proposal to build a 125 foot tall, 178 unit affordable housing tower on the corner of 37th Street and 5th Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. They sought no input from the community and continue to intentionally exclude local residents from the process as it rapidly progresses.
This enormous building would be completely out of context with 37th Street and the neighborhood at large, rising 3X higher than existing zoning would allow. It would also create a number of negative effects on our neighborhood, like diminishing light and airflow, straining public transportation, increasing traffic, decreasing available parking, and unearthing harmful toxins that the FAC readily admits are likely embedded in the site.
We believe this proposed building does nothing to serve current Sunset Park residents, who will be most impacted by it, and sets a dangerous precedent for the future development of enormous buildings in Brooklyn without regard for existing residents or neighborhood context.
By signing the petition below, you will join the 37th Street Block Association in voicing our opposition to the proposed massive, out-of-scale building and stand up for our neighborhood’s right to meaningfully participate in shaping its own future.
